Travel Vlogger Arrested for Spying, Old Warning Sparks Outrage

A popular Indian travel vlogger, Jyoti Malhotra, known for her channel ‘Travel with Jo’, has been arrested on charges of spying for Pakistan. This arrest has sent shockwaves through the Indian online community, especially after a social media post from over a year ago warned of potential links between Malhotra and Pakistan.

Who is Jyoti Malhotra?

Jyoti Malhotra, a resident of Hisar, Haryana, amassed nearly 4 lakh subscribers on her YouTube channel and a large following on Instagram. Her arrest came weeks after the Pahalgam terror attack in which over 25 civilians were killed, adding to the tense atmosphere in the region.

The Warning That Foreshadowed the Arrest

In May 2024, an X user named Kapil Jain raised concerns about Malhotra’s activities, urging the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to investigate her. Jain cited her visit to a Pakistani embassy function, a 10-day trip to Pakistan, and her subsequent plans to travel to Kashmir as suspicious.

This post, which has since gone viral, has garnered over a million views since Malhotra’s arrest. Many users expressed astonishment that a private citizen seemingly uncovered a potential espionage case a year before the authorities.

The Allegations Against Malhotra

According to reports, Malhotra was allegedly in contact with a Pakistani staffer at the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi, Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish. This staffer was expelled by India on May 13, 2025, for alleged espionage activities. Malhotra reportedly met with Danish while seeking a visa to visit Pakistan in 2023.

An FIR filed with the Civil Lines Police Station on May 16, 2025, states that Malhotra met with Danish’s acquaintance Ali Ahwan, who arranged her accommodation in Pakistan. Ahwan further facilitated meetings with Pakistani Security and Intelligence officials, including Shakir and Rana Shahbaz. To avoid suspicion, Malhotra saved Shahbaz’s number as ‘Jatt Randhawa’.

The Fallout and Questions Raised

Malhotra’s arrest has raised serious questions about security lapses and the potential for foreign influence within India. The fact that a social media user identified potential threats a year prior to the official investigation highlights the need for greater vigilance and improved intelligence gathering.
