Tragedy Strikes Simhachalam Temple: Wall Collapse Claims 7 Lives During Chandanotsavam Festival

Tragedy at Simhachalam Temple
A devastating wall collapse during the Chandanotsavam festival at the Simhachalam temple in Andhra Pradesh has claimed the lives of seven devotees, including three women. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon as heavy rains, thunderstorms, and strong winds battered the region.
The newly constructed wall, which was part of the temple complex, collapsed onto a queue of devotees waiting to participate in the festivities. This marked the first time in the centuries-old history of the Chandanotsavam festival that any fatalities have occurred. While previous events have seen stampedes, none had resulted in deaths.
Victims Identified
The deceased have been identified as K. Mandikantha Eswara Sesha Rao (29), Yedla Venkata Rao (58), HCL employee Pilla Umamaheswara Rao (30), his wife Pilla Sailaja (29), his mother-in-law Venkata Ratnam (45), and G Mahalakshmi (65). Praveen, another devotee, sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Cause of the Collapse
Initial reports suggest that the wall collapsed due to substandard construction. It is believed to have contained excessive sand and insufficient cement, making it structurally unsound.
Government Response and Investigations
Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has expressed his deepest condolences and announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakhs for the families of the deceased and Rs 3 lakhs for the injured. He has also commissioned a three-member committee to investigate the incident and determine the cause of the tragic collapse.
National Response
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared ex-gratia payments of Rs 2 lakhs for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Deputy Chief Minister Pavan Kalyan offered his condolences to the bereaved families.
