A 12-year-old boy in West Bengal tragically took his own life after being publicly humiliated by a shopkeeper for allegedly stealing a packet of chips. Krishendu Das, a seventh-grader, is now gone, leaving behind a devastated family and a community grappling with the devastating consequences of this heartbreaking incident.
A Moment of Despair
According to reports, Krishendu had attempted to buy a packet of chips from a local shop in Medinipur district but couldn’t get the shopkeeper’s attention. Eventually, he reportedly took a packet of Kurkure chips and left without paying. When the shopkeeper, Subhankar Dikshit, returned, he allegedly chased Krishendu, slapped him, and forced him to do sit-ups in full public view.
A Mother’s Plea and a Final Message
Krishnendu’s mother was called to the scene, and she, too, scolded and slapped him. Krishendu insisted he had found the chips lying on the ground and intended to pay for them later. He even offered to pay immediately, apologizing for taking the packet without permission. However, the shopkeeper accused him of lying.
Heartbroken and feeling unjustly treated, Krishnendu went home, locked himself in his room, and consumed pesticide. A suicide note, written in Bengali, was found beside him. In his final words, he pleaded his innocence, stating that he had not stolen, and expressed his love for Kurkure chips.
