Tragedy at Simhachalam Temple: Wall Collapse Kills Eight Devotees
A religious celebration turned into a heartbreaking tragedy early Wednesday morning when a newly built wall collapsed at the historic Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple in Simhachalam, Visakhapatnam, India. The incident claimed the lives of eight devotees and left several others injured.
Chandanotsavam Festival Underway
The tragedy occurred during the annual Chandanotsavam festival, a major religious event that attracts thousands of devotees who come to witness a rare darshan (viewing) of the deity in its true form. The wall collapsed along the Ghat Road leading to the temple, where devotees had gathered for early morning rituals.
Heavy Rain Possibly to Blame
Preliminary reports suggest that heavy overnight rainfall may have weakened the structure, leading to its collapse. Devotees were standing in a special queue line, which cost Rs 300, when the wall suddenly gave way.
Leaders Express Grief and Support
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the incident, confirming he had spoken with district authorities and directed them to ensure immediate medical care for the injured. He also pledged full support to the victims’ families.
Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan also expressed condolences and assured the state’s support for the bereaved families. “It is deeply unfortunate that such a tragedy occurred during a sacred celebration,” he said.
