Pahalgam Terror Attack: India, Pakistan Locked in Diplomatic Standoff
Tensions are high between India and Pakistan following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir. The attack, which took place on Tuesday, has prompted a strong response from India, with the country’s Home Minister Amit Shah convening a crucial meeting to discuss the future of the Indus Waters Treaty – a 1960 agreement regulating water sharing between the two nations. Sources have confirmed to The Hindu that India has put the treaty on hold.
Adding to the tensions, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has arrived in Kashmir to assess the situation firsthand. He’ll be meeting with top Army commanders to discuss security measures and the aftermath of the attack. Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has also traveled to Kashmir to visit those injured in the violence.
The international community is also expressing concern. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is closely monitoring the situation and has urged both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint to prevent further escalation.
Global Pressure for De-escalation
The World Bank, which plays a role in overseeing the Indus Waters Treaty, has stated that it hasn’t been officially informed of India’s decision to put the treaty on hold. This lack of communication adds another layer of complexity to the situation.
Adding fuel to the fire, Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat made a strong statement, vowing that not even a drop of water from the Indus River would flow to Pakistan. These remarks have further heightened tensions and raised concerns about the potential for a larger conflict.
