Telugu Language Requirement for Telangana Judges Sparks Controversy

Telangana Judicial Services: Telugu Proficiency Now Mandatory
The Telangana High Court has upheld a new rule requiring candidates for judicial service to be fluent in Telugu. This decision has sparked debate, with some arguing that it unfairly excludes Urdu speakers.
The rule, which came into effect in June 2023, mandates that aspiring judges be conversant in Telugu. The exam scheme also includes translation between English and Telugu.
One candidate, Hussain, challenged the rule, arguing that he had studied exclusively in Urdu and should have an option to demonstrate proficiency in Urdu instead. He emphasized that Urdu is a significant part of Telangana’s cultural heritage and is officially recognized as a second language under the Telangana Official Languages Act of 1966.
However, the High Court dismissed his plea, stating that the decision to prioritize Telugu was a policy choice based on its status as the most widely spoken language in the state.
