Telangana IAS Officer Transferred After Controversial Social Media Post

Smita Sabharwal, a prominent IAS officer in Telangana, has been transferred from her role as secretary of the youth advancement, tourism & culture department following a controversial social media post. The transfer comes just weeks after Sabharwal reposted an AI-generated image depicting deforestation at the Kancha Gachibowli-Hyderabad Central University lands. The image was perceived as critical of the state government’s actions, leading to scrutiny and ultimately, her transfer.

Sabharwal has now been posted as Member Secretary of the Telangana Finance Commission, a move seen as a less influential position. This comes after she was served notices by the Cyberabad police for questioning in connection with the reposted image. The Telangana Police took action against Sabharwal following Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s stance against AI-generated fake content circulating online that was perceived as damaging the government’s image.

Known for her outspoken nature, Sabharwal has faced controversy before. Last year, she sparked debate by questioning the reservation for persons with disabilities in the All-India Services. She also drew criticism for her comments on the release of convicts in the Bilkis Bano rape case.

One IAS officer, speaking to ThePrint, stated that Sabharwal’s actions warrant disciplinary action for violating the All-India Service officers’ conduct rules.
