Congress MP Shashi Tharoor Defends Government on Pahalgam Attack

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has come to the defense of the Indian government’s intelligence services following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack. Speaking on Sunday, Tharoor acknowledged that no country has a foolproof intelligence system, citing the recent Hamas attack on Israel as an example. He emphasized that we only hear about the attacks that intelligence agencies fail to prevent, while successful operations often go unnoticed.

“No country can ever have a foolproof 100% intelligence. We will never know about the various terror attacks that were successfully thwarted. We only get to know about the ones that we failed to thwart. This is normal in any nation. There were failures, I agree, but that should not be our main focus right now,” Tharoor stated, as quoted by news agency ANI.

Comparing India’s Situation to Israel

Tharoor drew a parallel between India’s situation and Israel’s experience after Hamas attacked a music festival in October 2023, highlighting that even countries with renowned intelligence agencies can be caught off guard. He suggested that, just as Israel is waiting until the end of the conflict to demand accountability, India should also focus on resolving the current crisis before scrutinizing the government’s actions.

“We have got the example of Israel, the world’s best intelligence services according to everybody, which were taken by surprise on October 7, just two years ago. It seems to me, just as Israel is waiting till the end of the war before they demand accountability, similarly, I think we too should see the present crisis through and then demand accountability from the government,” Tharoor said.

Siddaramaiah Clarifies Remarks on War with Pakistan

Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah clarified his earlier remarks that sparked controversy. He had stated that there was “no need for war” between India and Pakistan, a statement that drew criticism from the BJP. Siddaramaiah clarified that he did not mean to say that war was unnecessary but rather that it should not be the immediate solution.
He emphasized that the responsibility of providing security lies with the central government and called for increased security measures in Kashmir.

The Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians, including tourists, has heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.
