Science Icon: Prof. Jayant Narlikar, Champion of Alternative Universe Theories, Dies at 86

A Giant in Indian Science
The world of astrophysics mourns the loss of Prof. Jayant Narlikar, a pioneering Indian scientist who passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday at the age of 86. He was a renowned cosmologist and a strong advocate for alternative theories to the widely accepted Big Bang model for the universe’s origin.
Prof. Narlikar was the founder-director of the prestigious Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune. His groundbreaking work and dedication to science communication earned him a place as one of India’s most celebrated scientists.
A Life Dedicated to Research and Education
Born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, in 1938, Prof. Narlikar’s passion for science was evident from a young age. He excelled academically, earning degrees from Banaras Hindu University and Cambridge University. At Cambridge, he received the prestigious Smith’s Prize and Adams Prize, showcasing his exceptional talent in mathematics and astrophysics.
He later returned to India, leading the Theoretical Astrophysics Group at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and establishing IUCAA in 1988. Under his leadership, IUCAA grew into a world-renowned center for astronomy and astrophysics research and education.
Challenging Conventional Thought
Prof. Narlikar was known for his bold ideas and willingness to challenge conventional wisdom. He collaborated with renowned astronomer Fred Hoyle, exploring alternative cosmological models that deviated from the dominant Big Bang theory. His unwavering pursuit of knowledge and his willingness to question established paradigms inspired generations of scientists.
A Lasting Legacy
Prof. Narlikar’s passing is a profound loss to the scientific community. His profound contributions to cosmology, his dedication to scientific education, and his inspiring example continue to leave a lasting mark on the world.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Prof. Narlikar, calling him a luminary in astrophysics and highlighting the value of his pioneering theoretical frameworks for future generations of researchers.
IUCAA Director Prof. R Srianand echoed these sentiments, describing Prof. Narlikar as an inspiration and the father of Indian cosmology. He emphasized Prof. Narlikar’s unwavering commitment to science popularization and his belief in the crucial role of research institutes in spreading scientific awareness.
