High Court Criticizes Punjab for Blocking Water to Haryana

High Court Takes Aim at Punjab Over Dam Water Row
The High Court has strongly criticized Punjab for blocking water flow from the Nangal dam to Haryana, calling the move “not in good spirit”. This comes after Punjab took action to restrict water release, escalating tensions between the two states over water sharing.
ASG Jain Raises Concerns
Additional Solicitor General Satya Pal Jain, representing the central government, pointed out that the water dispute involves not only Haryana but also Rajasthan. He emphasized that the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) resolution, which governs water allocation, hasn’t been legally challenged. Jain urged anyone dissatisfied with the BBMB’s decision to pursue legal avenues instead of taking unilateral action.
All States Equal, Says Jain
Jain stressed that all states have an equal right to water originating from Himachal Pradesh, the source of the river. He expressed concern about the potential for future disruptions if Punjab continues to block water access. He questioned the logic of Punjab’s actions, stating that the water being withheld isn’t exceeding their allocated share.
Security Concerns Raised
The court also raised concerns about security at the Nangal dam, which is currently overseen by Punjab Police. The court inquired about who is responsible for ensuring the dam’s safety and received confirmation from the Punjab government that it is their responsibility.
A Call for Resolution
The High Court’s intervention highlights the urgent need for a peaceful and equitable resolution to the water dispute between Punjab and Haryana. The court’s strong criticism of Punjab’s actions underscores the importance of adhering to established water-sharing agreements and seeking legal remedies when disagreements arise.
