Nationwide Mock Drills in India
India is conducting nationwide mock drills today, May 7, 2025, to assess its preparedness for potential threats. The drills, ordered by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, come in the wake of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, where 26 people lost their lives.
How the Drills are Unfolding
Across the country, various security agencies, including civil defence, police, fire, and rescue teams, are participating in the exercises. The drills simulate different scenarios, such as air raids, fires, and search and rescue operations.
Here’s a glimpse of the drills in action in different states:
Delhi
– Mock security drills are being conducted at 55 locations, including Connaught Place, Khan Market, and Chandni Chowk.
– Sirens will be sounded across 15 police districts to simulate an air raid.
– Schools also participated in safety drills, practicing orderly evacuations, taking shelter under desks, and switching off electrical appliances.
Kerala
– Statewide civil defence mock drills are being conducted in all 14 districts.
– Sirens will sound three times for 30 seconds at 4 p.m.
– In areas without sirens, announcements in places of worship will be used to alert the public.
Telangana
– A large-scale civil defence mock drill is taking place in Hyderabad.
– Sirens across the city, including industrial sirens, police public address systems, and fire engine sirens, will be activated for two minutes to initiate the drill.
– Citizens are being urged to seek immediate shelter and follow official instructions.
Tamil Nadu
– A civil defence exercise is being conducted at the Madras Atomic Power Station in Kalpakkam and the Chennai Port Trust campuses.
Karnataka
– Air raid warnings and reaction drills are being conducted in Bengaluru, Karwar, Raichur, Mysuru, and Mandya districts.
– The first drill will be held at the Civil Defence Headquarters in Bengaluru.
Maharashtra
– Mock drills are being conducted at 16 locations across 10 districts, involving over 10,000 volunteers.
Haryana
– The state has made elaborate preparations for the mock drills, which will cover multiple levels, down to villages.
Uttar Pradesh
– A full-scale civil defence mock drill is taking place across all districts.
– Bareilly will observe a district-wide blackout from 8 p.m. to 8:10 p.m.
Rajasthan
– Mock drills are being conducted in 28 cities, with Kota and Rawatbhata classified as the most sensitive locations.
Gujarat
– Mock drills will be held at vital installations in 18 districts, and citizens will participate in ‘blackout’ drills.
Assam
– Extensive mock drills are being conducted in 14 civil defence districts.
Andhra Pradesh
– Drills will be conducted at two locations in Visakhapatnam district.
West Bengal
– Mock drills will be conducted for the next seven days, with sirens being activated to test the readiness of security systems.
Tripura
– Civil Defence mock drills are being held in all eight districts.
Chandigarh
– A 10-minute blackout drill will be conducted, with sirens activated at 7:30 p.m.
Andaman & Nicobar Islands
– Mock drills are scheduled for 4 p.m. at JNRM College in Port Blair.
The nationwide drills underscore India’s commitment to strengthening its preparedness for potential threats and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
