Mysore Sandal Soap: A Karnataka Icon Facing Controversy
The appointment of Bollywood and South Indian actress Tamannaah Bhatia as the brand ambassador for Mysore Sandal soaps has sparked a massive controversy in Karnataka. The state-owned Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Ltd (KSDL), which manufactures the iconic soap, chose Bhatia for a two-year deal worth Rs 6.2 crore.
A Clash of Cultures: Kannada Pride vs. Business Strategy
The controversy stems from the fact that Bhatia is not a Kannada speaker, and many pro-Kannada groups and individuals feel that a non-Kannadiga should not be the face of a brand deeply intertwined with the state’s identity. The Kannada film industry is itself referred to as ‘Sandalwood’, further emphasizing the connection.
Karnataka Industries Minister M.B. Patil, who defended the appointment, emphasized its business rationale. He pointed out that only 18% of Mysore Sandal soaps are sold in Karnataka, with the remaining 82% sold in other South Indian states. His vision is to take the brand to a national and international level, even suggesting a possible Hollywood actress as a future brand ambassador.
Protests and Pushback
The controversy has fueled the ongoing debate about ‘outsiders’ versus ‘locals’ in Karnataka. Several pro-Kannada organizations have staged protests in Bengaluru, demanding the government replace Bhatia with a Kannada actress.
Kannada actor and activist Chetan Kumar Ahimsa voiced his disapproval on X, stating that the government should have chosen someone who reflects the spirit of Karnataka. He also questioned Minister Patil’s decision-making process.
Yaduveer Wadiyar, scion of the erstwhile Mysore kingdom and a BJP MP, also criticized the decision, calling it “deeply irresponsible and insensitive”. He argued that Mysore Sandal Soap is a symbol of Karnataka’s cultural heritage and that choosing a non-Kannadiga ambassador is disrespectful to the people of the state.
The Brand’s Past and Present
Mysore Sandal Soap has a rich history, dating back to 1916 when it was established by the Maharaja of Mysore and Diwan Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah. The brand is known for its high-quality sandalwood oil, a legacy that continues to this day. In recent years, KSDL has seen remarkable financial success, with profits almost doubling in the last year. The appointment of Bhatia as brand ambassador comes at a time when the company aims to achieve a turnover of Rs 5000 crore by 2030.
