Modi Convenes Urgent Meeting as India-Pakistan Tensions Flare

PM Modi Addresses Border Tensions in Meeting with Top Officials
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting in New Delhi on Sunday to discuss the escalating tensions with Pakistan along the western border. Joining him were Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and the chiefs of India’s three armed services. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan were also present at the meeting.
Background: Operation Sindoor and Pahalgam Attack
The meeting comes after a series of events, including India’s Operation Sindoor on May 7th. This operation targeted nine terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as retaliation for the deadly Pahalgam attack on April 22nd, which killed 26 tourists. In the aftermath of these events, tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations soared.
Understanding Reached, but Violations Reported
Despite the heightened tensions, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced on Saturday that an understanding had been reached between India and Pakistan to stop all firing and military action. He emphasized that India remains steadfast in its commitment to combating terrorism. The agreement followed a conversation between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries.
However, India later accused Pakistan of violating this understanding. The Indian Army reportedly retaliated against border intrusions, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. He called these violations “very serious” and condemned Pakistan’s actions.
Looking Ahead
The DGMOs of India and Pakistan are scheduled to speak again on May 12th to discuss the situation further. The situation remains fragile, and the world watches closely for any potential escalation.
