Manipur: Security Forces Stir Controversy, Raise Questions About Role

Two Controversies Plague Manipur’s Security Forces
Manipur is once again grappling with controversy as the actions of security forces have sparked outrage and raised serious questions about their role in maintaining peace in the troubled state. Two recent incidents involving the Mahar Regiment, the Border Security Force (BSF), and the Assam Rifles have ignited tensions and fueled concerns about the security forces’ conduct.
Bus Signage Row: A Blow to Manipur’s Identity
The first controversy erupted when security personnel stopped a Manipur State Transport bus en route to Ukhrul for the Shirui Lily Festival. The reason? They demanded the state’s name be obscured before the bus could proceed through Kuki areas. This incident, seen by many as an attack on Manipur’s identity, triggered a 48-hour shutdown in the valley districts.
The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) condemned the action, demanding apologies from the governor and the resignation of state security officials. They argue that the decision undermines Manipur’s constitutional and political identity and violates citizens’ fundamental rights.
Killing of Myanmar’s PDO Members: Allegations of Unprovoked Execution
Adding fuel to the fire, the Assam Rifles killed ten members of Myanmar’s People’s Defence Organisation (PDO) near the India-Myanmar border. While the army claimed the individuals were armed cadres, Myanmar’s National Unity Government (NUG) vehemently disputed this, alleging they were captured, tortured, and summarily executed.
The NUG called for a thorough investigation and accountability, emphasizing that the deceased were not insurgents operating against the Indian government. This incident raises concerns about a breakdown in protocols between security forces and the PDO, potentially jeopardizing India’s efforts to revive the Kaladan multi-modal project.
A Growing Concern: Overreach and Misconduct
These incidents highlight a growing concern about the overreach and potential misconduct of security forces in Manipur. Experts warn that such actions can be counterproductive, damaging India’s interests in the region and jeopardizing peace efforts. The need for clear protocols, accountability, and respect for human rights in the state is more pressing than ever.
