Malayalam Film Directors Suspended Over Drug Possession

Malayalam Film Industry Shaken by Drug Arrests
The Malayalam film industry is reeling after the arrest of two prominent directors, Khalid Rahman and Ashraf Hamza, along with a friend, for alleged possession of hybrid ganja.
The arrests, made by the excise department in the early hours of Sunday during a raid on a flat in Kochi, have sent shockwaves through the industry. The flat, rented by renowned cinematographer Sameer Thahir, yielded 1.5 grams of the drug.
FEFKA Takes Strict Action
Sibi Malayil, president of the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), confirmed to Onmanorama that both directors will be suspended. Malayil emphasized that this decision stems from the growing concern over drug use within the industry.
He stated, “Given the increase in drug abuse inside the industry, we have decided to take strict action. The directors will be handed suspensions in connection with the case.”
FEFKA has been actively combating drug use within its ranks. Since March, a seven-member committee has been stationed at film locations to enhance internal monitoring. Earlier this year, a makeup artist caught using drugs was suspended by the makeup artists’ union under FEFKA’s guidance. Malayil assured that FEFKA would fully cooperate with law enforcement authorities in any investigations related to drug abuse within the industry.
Released on Bail
The three individuals arrested were later released on station bail.
