Major Victory: Security Forces Decimate Maoist Presence in Chhattisgarh

Major Anti-Maoist Operation a Success in Chhattisgarh
Security forces have declared a significant victory in their ongoing fight against Maoist rebels, following a massive 21-day operation at the Karregutta hill in Chhattisgarh.
The operation, described as the largest and most extensive anti-Maoist operation to date, resulted in the deaths of at least 31 Maoists and the recovery of 450 improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Eighteen security personnel were injured during the intense encounters.
Addressing a press conference in Bijapur, CRPF Director General Gyanendra Pratap Singh and Chhattisgarh Director General of Police Arun Dev Gautam highlighted the operation’s success in crippling the Maoist leadership and disrupting their operations.
Maoist Leaders Targeted
ADG Vivekananda Sinha, the chief of the state police’s anti-Naxal operations, revealed that several senior Maoist cadres, including high-ranking leaders, were either killed or seriously injured during the operation. However, recovering all bodies proved challenging due to the rugged terrain.
“The main objective of the operation was to dislocate the leadership congregating in one place,” Sinha explained. “The forces have succeeded in that objective, and their leadership is completely segregated and dislocated. Even their military formations have been splintered into smaller groups, and they have taken shelter at different places,” he added.
Challenges and Lessons Learned
The operation presented numerous challenges, including the Maoists’ use of sophisticated hideouts in caves, the presence of a large number of IEDs, and the need for innovative tactics to neutralize the threat.
“One of the major learnings or new techniques we used during these operations was cave interventions,” CRPF Chief Singh noted. “Generally, our troops are trained for house intervention and vehicle intervention. This was the first time that we were encountering caves in such large numbers, so we had to work it out so that we do not suffer casualties and can neutralise the Maoists present there,” he added.
The success of the operation underlines the commitment of security forces to eliminate Maoist violence from the country by March 2026, as announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Tough Terrain and Determined Forces
The Karregutta hill, stretching 60 km long and 5-20 km wide, presents a formidable challenge due to its terrain. However, security forces, including troops from the CRPF, its elite CoBRA unit, the state’s Special Task Force, and the District Reserve Guard, successfully navigated this hostile environment to achieve their objective.
The operation resulted in the recovery of a significant number of weapons and explosives, including 818 BGL shells and four technical units used by the Maoists for manufacturing weapons.
Continuing the Fight
Despite the setbacks, the Maoists remain a potent threat, and security forces will continue their relentless pursuit to eradicate their presence from the country.
The lessons learned from this operation will undoubtedly contribute to future anti-Maoist operations, further strengthening the security forces’ capabilities.
