Madhya Pradesh Minister Issues Second Apology Over ‘Linguistic Mistake’

Minister’s Controversial Remarks Spark Investigation
Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah has issued a second public apology for his controversial remarks about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a high-ranking officer in the Indian Army. Shah’s apology comes days after the Supreme Court rejected his initial apology and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case against him.
Shah, who serves as the Minister for Tribal Affairs, Public Asset Management, and Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation, claimed that his earlier comments were a “linguistic mistake” and that he never intended to hurt or offend any religion, caste, or community. He expressed his love for the nation and respect for the Indian Army, adding that his words had caused pain to the community and countrymen.
SIT Begins Probe, Shah Yet to Be Questioned
On May 20, the Supreme Court directed the formation of a three-member SIT to investigate the FIR filed against Shah by the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The SIT is currently gathering evidence and collecting information about the incident.
Sagar Inspector General (IG) of Police Pramod Verma, who is heading the SIT, confirmed that the investigation is underway. He stated that a report will be submitted to the Supreme Court at the next hearing scheduled for May 28. Vahini Singh, another IPS officer on the SIT, disclosed that Shah has not yet been called for questioning.
Opposition Raises Concerns Over SIT Credibility
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress party has questioned the credibility of the SIT, alleging that some of the officers involved have previously worked under Shah. The Congress claims the investigation might be a way to protect the minister and demands his dismissal from the Cabinet. Umang Singhar, the Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, expressed skepticism about the government’s commitment to a fair investigation.
Shah Remains Low-Profile Amidst Backlash
Shah has kept a low profile since his controversial remarks on May 12 at a public event in Mhow near Indore. The remarks, which allegedly implied a connection between Colonel Qureshi and the terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack, sparked widespread condemnation and calls for his resignation. Shah missed a crucial Cabinet meeting held in Indore on May 20, further fueling speculation about his political future.
