A Witness From the Trees

A local man who bravely hid in a tree during the terrifying Pahalgam attack is now playing a crucial role in helping investigators understand what happened. He spent over an hour up in the tree, watching the entire horrific scene unfold.

This man, who police believe may have valuable information about the terrorists, has been questioned by authorities and even taken back to the Baisaran valley where the attack took place. He’s helping investigators recreate the events of that tragic day.

Gathering Clues

Police are also carefully examining his phone, hoping to find any additional clues or evidence related to the attack.

A Crowded Meadow

Officials estimate that at least 400 people were in the Baisaran meadow at the time of the attack. While the exact number of tickets sold is still being tallied, those figures put the number of people present during the tragedy around 400, with a total of around 1,000 tickets sold that day.

Thankfully, the quick thinking and bravery of local residents likely prevented a higher death toll. Eyewitnesses say that at least three gunmen jumped over a fence surrounding the park and started shooting towards the center of the meadow. They left the gate open as they fled, allowing local ponywallas to help tourists escape.

Lack of Security Raises Questions

Several eyewitnesses, including Nazakat Ahmad Shah who helped rescue people during the attack, have stated that there wasn’t much visible security presence at the Baisaran meadow in recent times. They say that while more popular tourist spots in Pahalgam have security, Baisaran seemed to be overlooked.

This raises serious questions about security measures in the area. Baisaran, located about six kilometers from the market and accessible by foot or on ponies, is also a popular starting point for a trek to Lake Tulian, a remote alpine lake that draws many foreign tourists.
