Kolkata Hotel Fire: 14 Dead in Devastating Blaze

Tragedy Strikes Kolkata: 14 Dead in Hotel Fire
A devastating fire ripped through Rituraj Hotel in Kolkata’s congested Burrabazar area on Tuesday evening, April 29, 2025, claiming the lives of at least 14 people and injuring over 13 others. The blaze, which started around 8:15 p.m., sent shockwaves through the city as firefighters battled the inferno throughout the night.
The fire’s rapid spread, fueled by combustible materials stored within the six-story building, created a terrifying scene. Many trapped inside desperately tried to escape, with one man tragically losing his life after jumping from the top floor in a desperate bid to save himself. The remaining 13 deaths were attributed to suffocation.
Rescue efforts were hampered by the narrow, cramped lanes of Burrabazar, making it difficult for emergency vehicles to access the scene. Over 10 fire engines worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, eventually bringing it under control in the early hours of Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her profound grief, stating, “My heart goes out to the victims…Investigation has been ordered. My condolences to the victim families and solidarity for all affected.” She personally monitored the rescue operations throughout the night.
The tragedy has sparked widespread concern about safety standards in the city. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari called for a thorough investigation into the incident, questioning the adequacy of emergency response and the building’s safety measures.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences and announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh to the families of each deceased and ₹50,000 to each injured individual from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).
The incident has reignited discussions about fire safety regulations in Kolkata, especially in densely populated areas. Authorities are expected to launch a comprehensive probe to determine the exact cause of the fire and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
