Kashmir Attack: India Takes Action as Investigations Continue

Tragedy struck the picturesque tourist town of Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir last week when a deadly attack claimed the lives of 26 people. In the aftermath, Indian authorities have launched a massive investigation and taken swift action, demolishing the homes of at least 10 alleged militants and detaining hundreds for questioning.

The attack, the deadliest on civilians in two decades in the disputed region, has heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. Both countries claim Kashmir, and the region has been a flashpoint for conflict for decades. India accuses Pakistan of supporting the militants behind the killings, but Pakistan denies any involvement.

Since the attack, Indian security forces have been conducting extensive searches, detaining over 1,500 people. While the exact number of those detained since then remains unclear, officials have confirmed the demolition of homes linked to families of suspected militants. These demolitions have sparked controversy, with some questioning the targeting of innocent civilians.

\

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, while supporting action against those responsible, urged caution, stating that the guilty must be punished but “innocent people shouldn’t become collateral damage.” Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need to differentiate between “terrorists and civilians.” The Indian Supreme Court has already banned “bulldozer justice” – the practice of demolishing homes as a form of punishment – raising further questions about the legality of these actions.

\

The situation remains tense, with both Indian and Pakistani troops exchanging fire across the border. There is speculation about whether India will respond with military strikes, as they did after similar attacks in 2019 and 2016.

\

Adding to the turmoil, Kashmiri students studying in other parts of India have reported facing harassment and threats, prompting fears of further escalation and communal tension.
