Heightened Security Across Karnataka Following Pahalgam Incident

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on Thursday that security has been significantly increased at critical infrastructure sites across the state, including dams and coastal regions. This move comes as a precautionary measure in response to the recent Pahalgam incident in Kashmir and the ongoing Operation Sindoor against terrorists.

Center’s Directives and Civil Defence Drills

Siddaramaiah stated that the Centre has issued directives for civil defence drills, which are currently being conducted throughout the state. He emphasized that the government is taking all necessary precautions to safeguard key installations.

Addressing Concerns and Deployment of Special Forces

Responding to concerns raised by the BJP regarding Pakistani nationals residing in Karnataka, Siddaramaiah clarified that most have already been deported. He added that a few individuals are currently in court and the due process is being followed.

Home Minister G Parameshwara further detailed the state’s preparedness. He highlighted the deployment of specialized units like the Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF) to protect vital installations such as the Raichur thermal power station, the Kaiga nuclear facility, and the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam. These units are highly trained, having undergone commando training, to ensure the safety of these critical infrastructure points.

Coastal Security Measures Intensified

Along the coast, the Coastal Security Police (CSP) has intensified patrolling from Dakshina Kannada to Uttara Kannada. The 324-km-long coastal stretch is now under heightened surveillance from CSP stations in locations like Mangaluru, Malpe, Karwar, and Bhatkal. Over 340 personnel, including 180 from the Coastal Control Force, are deployed, operating 13 boats and jet skis to ensure comprehensive maritime security.

Coastal security SP Mithun Kumar emphasized the increased vigilance, stating that personnel are on high alert following the Pahalgam incident. He disclosed that mock civil defence drills have been conducted in Karwar and intensified inspections of boats operating in the sea. Joint monitoring of maritime activity is being carried out by the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and CSP, with a particular focus on identifying foreign vessels.

Kumar further revealed that constant patrols are being conducted in shifts, suspicious boats arriving from other districts are being thoroughly inspected, and individuals deemed suspicious are being questioned. He also mentioned that four boats were penalized recently as part of the enhanced coastal security efforts.
