Justice Served: Gnanasekaran Found Guilty in Anna University Sexual Assault Case

Conviction in Anna University Sexual Assault Case
A Chennai court has delivered a significant verdict in the high-profile Anna University sexual assault case. Gnanasekaran, a 37-year-old man, has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old student on the university campus in December 2024.
Judge Rajalakshmi of Chennai’s Mahila Court reached this decision after accepting the report of an all-women Special Investigation Team appointed by the Madras High Court. The sentencing is yet to be announced.
The Crime that Shocked Tamil Nadu
The assault on the student inside Anna University, a prestigious institution in Chennai, sparked widespread outrage and protests across the state. The incident raised serious concerns about the safety of women on campuses and fueled political debate. The Opposition parties, particularly the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), alleged links between the accused and the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
DMK Welcomes Speedy Verdict
The DMK government has hailed the swiftness of the justice process, emphasizing its commitment to protecting women. DMK leader RS Bharathi highlighted the government’s swift actions, stating that the accused was arrested within 24 hours, charged within 60 days, and convicted within five months. He stressed that the government will not tolerate any crimes against women.
Opposition Demands Full Accountability
The AIADMK, however, maintained that while the conviction was welcome, crucial questions remained unanswered. They pointed to the accused’s alleged links with the DMK, citing photos of him posing with DMK ministers. AIADMK leader Edappadi Palaniswami called for the punishment of all individuals involved in the crime.
The “Sir” Campaign and Allegations
The AIADMK launched a campaign asking “Who is that, sir?” based on the student’s claim that Gnanasekaran had spoken to someone on the phone, referring to him as “sir,” during the assault. This raised suspicion about potential accomplices.
Chennai Police Commissioner A Arun clarified that Gnanasekaran had put his phone on airplane mode and pretended to speak to someone, but denied any other suspects in the case.
National Reactions and Campus Security
The BJP also joined the chorus, with its leader K Annamalai accusing the Tamil Nadu Police of leaking the student’s identity and alleging that Gnanasekaran was a repeat offender and a DMK functionary.
The incident prompted Anna University to enhance security measures on campus, including deploying more security personnel and installing additional CCTV cameras. A joint security audit was also conducted by the police and the university.
Compensation and Education Sponsorship
The Madras High Court, which took suo motu cognisance of the case, directed the state government to pay ₹25 lakh as compensation to the victim and ordered Anna University to sponsor her education for failing to ensure her safety.
More Details of the Case
The First Information Report (FIR) filed in the case stated that Gnanasekaran forced the student to perform “sexual acts.” He also threatened to leak a video he had recorded of her friend, demanding that the student meet him again. Gnanasekaran had previously faced 20 other cases, with convictions in six of them, primarily for petty crimes like theft and housebreaking.
