Jaishankar Slams West’s Hypocrisy on Pakistan Democracy

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has taken aim at Western powers for their alleged hypocrisy in supporting military regimes in Pakistan while criticizing India for its actions.

In an interview with Danish newspaper Politiken, Jaishankar stated that no entity has done more to undermine democracy in Pakistan than the West. He pointed out the stark contrast between Europe’s support for military dictatorships in the region and its condemnation of India’s actions regarding the Kashmir issue.

Jaishankar emphasized that while India respects international borders, it expects the same respect in return. He questioned why the inviolability of borders seems to be a double standard when it comes to India.

India’s Stance on Energy Imports and US-Mediated Ceasefire

Jaishankar also defended India’s continued oil imports from Russia, highlighting Europe’s own reliance on Middle Eastern oil despite its stance on Russia. He questioned whether the world should halt energy consumption simply because Europe demanded it.

He further clarified that the May 10 ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan was a direct result of military-to-military communication, rejecting US President Donald Trump’s claim of mediation. Jaishankar recounted how India’s Operation Sindoor – precision strikes on nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir – prompted Pakistan to agree to the ceasefire.

The operation came in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians. Pakistan retaliated with attempted strikes on Indian military bases, but all were thwarted by Indian forces.

Contextual Background

The ongoing tension between India and Pakistan stems from decades-old disputes, primarily over the disputed territory of Kashmir. Both countries have engaged in several conflicts, with cross-border terrorism remaining a major concern.
