India’s S-400 Missile Defence System Counters Pakistan Attack

India’s S-400 air defence missile system, a powerful Russian-made system, has been making headlines after successfully intercepting 15 missiles fired by Pakistan at military sites. This incident highlights the growing importance of air defence capabilities in the region.

A Mighty Defence System

The S-400 is renowned for its advanced radar technology and impressive interception capabilities. It can spot and shoot down aerial threats from long distances, significantly bolstering India’s air defence and national security.

A Major Investment

India signed a $5 billion deal with Russia in October 2018 to acquire five S-400 units. The Ministry of Defence stated at the time that the S-400 would be a “potent system” providing continuous and effective air defence over a vast area, significantly enhancing the nation’s air defence capabilities.

Thwarting the Attack

According to the Ministry of Defence, Pakistan targeted locations across India, including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bathinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj. However, India’s Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems successfully thwarted these attempts.

What Makes the S-400 Stand Out?

The S-400 is a multi-faceted defence system capable of engaging multiple targets simultaneously, including aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, at varying ranges and altitudes.

It consists of three main components: missile launchers, a powerful radar, and a command centre. Its ability to target aircraft, cruise missiles, even high-speed intermediate-range ballistic missiles makes it a formidable weapon.

The S-400 is considered a significant threat by NATO members due to its impressive long-range capabilities, making it a game-changer in modern air defence warfare.
