India’s Army Chief Authorizes Commanders for ‘Kinetic Response’ After Ceasefire Breaks Down

Army Chief Reviews Border Security After Ceasefire Breaches
Following a series of ceasefire violations along the western border, India’s Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi held a high-level meeting with senior commanders on Sunday. The meeting took place in response to the escalating tensions, which saw artillery exchanges and air defense activity near the border.
Full Authority Granted for Military Action
In a significant move, the Army Chief granted full authority to commanders stationed along the western border to take decisive military action if the ceasefire agreement is violated again. This means commanders now have the green light to engage in military operations, including direct confrontations, without requiring further authorization from higher command.
This decision comes after a ceasefire was reached on the evening of May 10th following diplomatic intervention by the United States. However, the fragile peace was shattered within hours as artillery barrages resumed in the Kashmir region.
Tensions Flare After Tourist Attack
The current crisis follows a deadly terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam on April 22nd, which claimed the lives of 26 people. This tragic incident triggered four days of intense fighting before the ceasefire agreement was reached.
The ceasefire agreement, brokered directly between India and Pakistan, was intended to de-escalate the situation and prevent further bloodshed. However, the recent violations have cast doubt on the agreement’s effectiveness and raised concerns about the potential for a renewed escalation of violence.
India Condemns Pakistan
India has condemned the ceasefire violations, accusing Pakistan of failing to uphold its commitments. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated in a televised address, “For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding arrived at earlier this evening”. He added, “The armed forces are giving an adequate and appropriate response to these violations. We call upon Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations and deal with the situation with seriousness and responsibility.”
