India Shows Off Air Defense Prowess After Foiling Attacks on Golden Temple
The Indian Army held a demonstration on Monday in Amritsar, Punjab, showcasing how its sophisticated air defense systems successfully protected the revered Golden Temple and other cities in the region from recent Pakistani missile and drone attacks.
A Multi-Layered Defense in Action
The display featured a variety of advanced technologies, including the upgraded L-70 Air Defence Guns, the AKASH missile system, and other cutting-edge defense capabilities. A soldier from the Indian Army explained to ANI that Pakistan targeted the Golden Temple after failing to strike Indian air bases and military installations. He said Pakistan launched “Kamikaze drones, surface-to-surface and air-to-surface missiles” directly at the temple. However, the Indian air defense systems intercepted and neutralized all the incoming threats with precision.
Operation Sindoor and the Recent Ceasefire
The demonstration comes after a tense exchange of fire between India and Pakistan that began with India’s Operation Sindoor on May 7th. India launched airstrikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, retaliating for a terror attack in Pahalgam. Pakistan responded with missile attacks and drone incursions, which India successfully countered. After three days of heightened military activity, a ceasefire was reached on May 10th.
Major General Seshadri: A Strong Defense System In Place
Major General Kartik C Seshadri, GOC, 15 Infantry Division, highlighted the strength and sophistication of India’s multi-tiered air defense strategy. He emphasized the system’s ability to detect and target threats at various ranges, with day and night surveillance capabilities, tracking systems, and fire control radars. The AKASH system, an indigenously developed system, plays a crucial role in integrating air defense resources from the Army, Air Force, and Navy, providing a unified air picture for faster decision-making and effective targeting.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Defenses
The soldier involved in the defense effort revealed that only 10% of the ammunition for ground-based and Army air defense weapons was used during the recent conflict. He also confirmed the recovery of captured drones, believed to be of Turkish origin, demonstrating the effectiveness of the Indian air defense system. The armed forces have initiated emergency procurement processes for additional loitering munitions, counter-UAV systems, anti-tank guided missiles, and artillery ammunition to replenish stocks and further strengthen their defenses.
