Turkish Ground Handling Firm Hit Hard by India’s Security Clearance Revokes
Shares of Celebi Hava Servisi AS, a Turkish ground handling company, took a dramatic plunge after India revoked the security clearance of its Indian subsidiary, Celebi Airport Services India. The decision, announced by India’s aviation watchdog, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), sent shockwaves through the market, with Celebi’s stock price plummeting by 10% in Istanbul on May 16th.
The BCAS cited ‘national security’ as the reason for revoking the clearance, a move that came after increasing pressure on the Indian government to take action against Celebi. The company has been operating in India for 15 years and provides services at nine major airports, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.
Growing Tensions Between India and Turkey
The decision to revoke Celebi’s security clearance is seen as a direct response to Turkey’s stance on the recent India-Pakistan conflict. Turkey has been a vocal supporter of Pakistan and has condemned India’s military strikes on terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), further escalating tensions between the two countries.
Adding fuel to the fire, Pakistan has heavily relied on Turkish drones in its military operations against India, solidifying the perception of a growing strategic alliance between Ankara and Islamabad.
Celebi Denies Allegations, India Takes Swift Action
Celebi Airport Services India has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, stating that it is not a Turkish organization and adheres to globally accepted practices of corporate governance. The company has also reaffirmed its commitment to India’s aviation sector.
However, the Indian government remained undeterred. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which previously contracted Celebi for ground handling and cargo operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), officially terminated its association with Celebi entities.
DIAL is now working with existing service providers AISATS and Brid Group to ensure smooth airport operations while prioritizing employee welfare.
The situation highlights the growing geopolitical tensions between India and Turkey, with the aviation sector becoming a focal point of the escalating rivalry.
Celebi’s Future in India Uncertain
The immediate future of Celebi’s operations in India remains uncertain. The company has yet to comment on its plans following the revocation of its security clearance, but the damage to its reputation and operations in the country is undeniable.
