India Takes Security Measures Amidst Escalating Tensions with Pakistan

Twenty-four airports across India have been temporarily closed to civilian flights as tensions between India and Pakistan reach a boiling point. This decision comes after a Pakistani drone and missile attack on Indian cities in Jammu, Punjab, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.

Airlines Issue Travel Advisories

In response to the heightened security threat, several Indian airlines have issued travel advisories, urging passengers to be prepared for extra security checks and plan their trips accordingly. While the Civil Aviation Ministry didn’t specify how long the airport closures would last, they did say that the move was part of a broader security protocol. Many of the affected airports are located near the international border or in strategically important areas.

Impact on Travel and Enhanced Security Measures

The grounding of flights is expected to significantly impact connectivity in northern and western India. Travelers are strongly encouraged to contact their airlines before heading to the airport to get the latest updates.

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has ordered all airlines and airports to strengthen security measures. This includes mandatory Secondary Ladder Point Checks (SLPC) – essentially pre-boarding inspections – at all airports.

Other security enhancements include:

  • Thorough vehicle checks at all airport terminals
  • Strict ID checks for entry
  • Random luggage screenings
  • Prohibition of visitor entry into terminal buildings
  • Deployment of Air Marshals

“In view of the recent attack in Pahalgam and subsequent surcharged security scenario, it is necessary to enhance security measures at all the civil aviation installations like airports, airstrips, airfields, air force stations, helipads, flying schools, and aviation training institutes so that no untoward incident takes place in the country. Accordingly, utmost precautions need to be taken by all the stakeholders,” BCAS stated in its order.

Airlines Prepare Passengers for Delays

Air India has advised passengers to allow extra time for check-in and boarding, stating that check-in will close 75 minutes before departure. Akasa Air has echoed this, asking passengers to arrive at least three hours before their flight. IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has also issued a statement highlighting the need for extra time due to heightened security measures.

Geopolitical Uncertainties and Response

With the current geopolitical climate remaining unpredictable, aviation officials and airline staff are working closely with national security agencies to manage operations and ensure passenger safety. The Indian government maintains that it responded to a terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22nd, stating that the choice to escalate the situation lies with Pakistan.
