India and Pakistan have exchanged military strikes, escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. The situation began with India launching “Operation Sindoor”, targeting nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, according to Indian officials.

India claims these strikes were aimed at “terrorist infrastructure” responsible for attacks against India, asserting a “focused, measured, and non-escalatory” approach. However, Pakistan reports heavy casualties and claims to have downed several Indian aircraft and captured soldiers.

Pakistani Response and International Concern

Pakistan has responded with its own attacks on Indian military targets, including heavy shelling across the Line of Control, the de facto border separating the two countries in the disputed region of Kashmir. The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has called for maximum restraint from both sides, warning against a “military confrontation” between the nuclear powers.

United States President Donald Trump also expressed concern, describing the clashes as “a shame” and hoping for a swift resolution.

Background of the Conflict

This latest escalation comes after a deadly attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir last month. India blamed Pakistan for the violence, which killed 26 men, while Pakistan denied any involvement. Tensions have been high between the two countries for decades over the disputed territory of Kashmir.

Expert Analysis

Nitasha Kaul, director of the Centre for the Study of Democracy, expressed concern over the strikes, stating that Kashmiris will be the worst affected by the escalating conflict. She also pointed to an increase in nationalist sentiment within India, suggesting that a more militaristic response had been anticipated.

While the situation remains volatile, hopes remain for de-escalation.
