India-Pakistan Tensions Escalate: 21 Airports Closed, Nation on High Alert

A high alert has been issued across India, particularly in states bordering Pakistan, following India’s targeted missile strikes on nine terror targets within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). Tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations surged after India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the deadly Pahalgam attack last month, which claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly tourists.

Airports Shut Down Across North and Northwest India

As a precautionary measure, at least 21 airports in North and Northwest India will remain closed until May 10th, according to the central government. No flights will be operating during this period. Sirivennela, ADCP-2 of Amritsar, confirmed the closure to news agency ANI.

Operation Sindoor: Targeting Terror Infrastructure

India’s Operation Sindoor involved precision missile strikes that destroyed key launch pads and headquarters of several banned terror outfits. These included Jaish-e-Mohammad’s stronghold in Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba’s base in Muridke, effectively crippling their operational capabilities.

Heightened Security Measures Across India

Punjab, sharing a 532-kilometer border with Pakistan, has placed its border districts on high alert. All public events have been cancelled, and schools have been shut down in several districts, including Ferozepur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Tarn Taran, as a precaution. The Punjab Police has also cancelled all leave for its officers and employees.

In Uttarakhand, security has been tightened across the state following directions from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Police teams are conducting identity verification and document checks, particularly along the Nepal border. Security arrangements for the ongoing Char Dham Yatra have also been significantly enhanced.

Rajasthan, with a 1,037-km border with Pakistan, has closed all government and private schools in its border districts. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma is in constant communication with top officials, and the state government is on high alert. Flight operations from Jaipur to Chandigarh and Hindon have also been cancelled.

Nationwide Mock Drills Simulate Hostile Scenarios

In a nationwide effort to prepare for potential emergencies, civil defence exercises named ‘Operation Abhyaas’ were conducted across various states and Union Territories. These drills simulated hostile scenarios, including air raids, fires, and rescue missions, involving thousands of personnel.

India-Pakistan Tensions: A Delicate Balance

The recent escalation in tensions between India and Pakistan underscores the precariousness of the situation. While India has taken decisive action against terror infrastructure, the potential for further conflict remains a serious concern. It is essential for both nations to exercise restraint and engage in constructive dialogue to de-escalate the situation and prevent a wider conflict.
