India-Pakistan Ceasefire Holds: Schools Reopen in J&K and Punjab

Ceasefire Holds After PM Modi’s Warning
Amidst continued tension with Pakistan, a fragile ceasefire remains in effect along the India-Pakistan border, with schools reopening in several towns in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab. This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a stern message to Pakistan on Monday, warning against any further provocations or ‘nuclear blackmail’.
While India has paused retaliatory strikes against Pakistani military targets and terrorist infrastructure, PM Modi made it clear that the pause is not permanent and future actions will depend on Pakistan’s behavior. His address followed four days of intense cross-border fighting, triggered by a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22nd that killed 26 people, mostly civilians.
Drone Interception and Explosions
Despite the ceasefire, there were reports of heightened activity along the border. Shortly after PM Modi’s address, Indian authorities intercepted 10 to 12 drones in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district, raising concerns about potential infiltration attempts. In Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district, residents reported hearing explosions, adding to the sense of unease.
DGMOs Discuss Ceasefire Agreement
On Monday evening, the directors general of military operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan spoke over a hotline for about 30 minutes to discuss the ongoing ceasefire agreement reached on May 10th. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining the truce and avoiding any provocative actions.
Operation Sindoor and the Path Forward
The ceasefire came after India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7th, conducting airstrikes against suspected terrorist targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation was a direct response to the Pahalgam attack. Now, the focus is on ensuring the fragile ceasefire holds, with both sides hoping to prevent a return to full-scale conflict.
