Intelligence Chief Gets Second Extension

Tapan Kumar Deka, the head of India’s premier intelligence agency, the Intelligence Bureau (IB), has been granted a one-year extension for the second time, keeping him in the crucial role until June 2026. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet made the decision on Tuesday.

Deka, a 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, is a seasoned counter-terrorism expert with decades of experience dealing with threats both within India and from neighboring Pakistan. His expertise is particularly relevant given recent incidents like the Pahalgam terror attack and India’s subsequent Operation Sindoor.

Why the Extension?

The extension for Deka comes as a relaxation of the standard rules governing superannuation age for government officials. These rules allow for extensions in “public interest,” which in Deka’s case likely reflects the ongoing security challenges India faces.

A Long and Distinguished Career

Deka’s tenure as IB chief began in June 2022. Prior to that, he headed the agency’s operations wing for over two decades, gaining invaluable experience handling high-profile cases.

He played a key role in the counter-operation during the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, and led operations against the Indian Mujahideen, a militant group responsible for numerous attacks in the 2000s. Deka’s experience also extends to managing crises in the northeast and his home state of Assam, as well as in Jammu and Kashmir.
