India Expels Second Pakistani Official in 8 Days

India has expelled a second Pakistani official from the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, citing activities ‘not in keeping with his official status’. This expulsion comes just eight days after another Pakistani official was expelled for alleged espionage.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the decision on Wednesday, stating that the official has been declared ‘persona non grata’ and must leave India within 24 hours. While the MEA didn’t disclose specific charges, it’s believed to be related to ongoing investigations into espionage activities by the Punjab Police.

Background of Rising Tensions

This latest expulsion further escalates the already tense situation between India and Pakistan. The tensions stem from India’s retaliatory airstrikes on terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) following a deadly attack on tourists in Jammu & Kashmir on April 22.

The attack, claimed by the Pakistan-based terrorist group LeT’s shadow group, the Resistance Front, resulted in the deaths of 26 tourists and sparked a significant military confrontation between the two countries.

India’s Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the attack, involved destroying infrastructure in nine terror bases in Pakistan and PoK. This action, however, led to further retaliatory strikes and counter-strikes, escalating the already volatile situation.

Tit-for-Tat Expulsions and Violations

In a tit-for-tat move, Pakistan declared a staff member of the Indian High Commission in Islamabad ‘persona non grata’, accusing him of engaging in activities ‘incompatible’ with his privileged status.

The situation took a further turn when India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on May 10, but Pakistan reportedly violated the agreement within hours.

Diplomatic Fallout

The expulsions and ongoing military tensions highlight the precarious state of relations between India and Pakistan. The Pakistani official’s expulsion adds another layer of complexity to an already volatile situation, raising concerns about further escalation and potential conflict.
