India and the Taliban: An Unexpected Alliance

India has made a surprising diplomatic move by reaching out to the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir. This comes as Pakistan faces its own woes with a Taliban-linked insurgency in its Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. Amidst escalating tensions, India is seemingly turning to the Taliban as a strategic partner, leaving Pakistan in a precarious diplomatic position.

From Frozen Ties to Diplomatic Engagement

Just a couple of years ago, India severed formal ties with Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover in August 2021. But now, an Indian delegation has visited Kabul, meeting with the Taliban’s top leadership to discuss “recent regional developments.” This marks a significant shift in India’s stance towards the Taliban, especially considering Pakistan’s long-standing support for the group.

This diplomatic outreach comes just days after Pakistan’s foreign minister, Ishaq Dar, visited Afghanistan after a year of strained relations. Pakistan has been facing criticism for its handling of Afghan refugees and accusations of harboring the Pakistani Taliban, further exacerbating tensions with Kabul.

Pakistan Panicked?

Meanwhile, Pakistan appears to be rattled by the developments. In response to the Pahalgam attack, Pakistan’s Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, claimed that India was planning a military strike on Pakistan. This claim, coupled with Pakistan’s defensive posture and frantic diplomatic efforts, has fueled speculation that Pakistan is feeling the heat.
