India Calls for International Oversight of Pakistan’s Nuclear Arsenal
Amidst heightened tensions following a recent military standoff, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has called for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take control of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons.
Singh made the strong statement during a visit to Jammu and Kashmir, where he addressed Indian soldiers and praised their performance during Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory strikes against Pakistani terror infrastructure.
Concerns Over Nuclear Safety
“The whole world has seen how irresponsibly Pakistan has threatened India. Today, from the land of Srinagar, I want to raise this question whether nuclear weapons are safe in the hands of such an irresponsible and rogue nation. I believe that Pakistan’s nuclear weapons should be taken under the supervision of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),” Singh said.
Singh’s remarks come just days after India and Pakistan ended their worst military conflict in nearly three decades. The conflict, triggered by India’s airstrikes on alleged terrorist camps in Pakistan, saw Pakistan retaliate with attempted attacks on Indian military bases.
Operation Sindoor and the Aftermath
The Indian military successfully thwarted Pakistan’s attacks and responded with precision strikes on eight Pakistani air bases, bringing the hostilities to an end after intense diplomatic efforts.
Singh commended the Indian armed forces for their performance during Operation Sindoor and praised the unity and anger shown by the people of Jammu and Kashmir against Pakistan and terrorism. He emphasized the need to maintain vigilance and combat readiness along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border.
During his visit, Singh will review the security situation and combat preparedness of frontline troops. He will also be briefed by top military officials on various aspects of the prevailing security situation.
