India Demands Pakistan De-escalate, Hands Over Terror Leaders

India is calling on Pakistan to immediately de-escalate the ongoing military tensions and hand over top terrorist leaders Masood Azhar and Hafiz Saeed, according to top government sources speaking to News18. India warned that Pakistan would face severe consequences if it fails to comply.

India’s government also wants Pakistan to focus on addressing the root cause of the conflict: eliminating terrorism within its borders.

Escalation Fears and a Call for Restraint

The demand for the surrender of Azhar and Saeed comes after US Vice President JD Vance described the escalating conflict as ‘none of our business’. Anil Sharma, a defence expert, highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating that the first 48 hours are crucial for de-escalation.
He explained that the conflict could rapidly escalate to involve the Indian Navy and potentially spill over into the plains of Punjab and Rajasthan, bringing India and Pakistan dangerously close to a nuclear confrontation.

Sharma emphasized the need to prevent this escalation, stressing that any further steps could lead to a nuclear exchange, which is unacceptable.

India’s Justification and Pakistan’s Response

India asserts that the recent terror attack on Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22 required a response, and that the perpetrators were operating from Pakistan. India claims it initially targeted only terror infrastructure and did not engage military installations or civilians until Pakistan retaliated.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has threatened India with ‘consequences’, but Defence Minister Khawaja Asif’s stance remains unclear. India believes that Pakistani ministers are creating hysteria and panic to save face domestically.

Pakistan’s Internal Pressures and a Potential Exit Strategy

India believes that Pakistan’s internal situation, grappling with a failing economy and internal rebellions, may limit its ability to sustain a prolonged conflict.
India sees the demand for Azhar and Saeed’s surrender as a possible opportunity for Pakistan to de-escalate and redeem its image as a haven for terrorists. However, the question remains whether the Pakistani army, which has historically exerted significant influence, would agree to this handover.

Deep Nexus Between Terror and Pakistan’s Security Establishment

Commodore Srikant Kesnur, a retired Indian Navy veteran, pointed out that Pakistan’s retaliatory actions to India’s Operation Sindoor only strengthened India’s case: the links between terrorists and Pakistan’s security establishment are deeply entrenched. He stated that India’s initial attack provided Pakistan an opportunity to de-escalate by ending the conflict, but they chose to escalate instead.

The ongoing two-day escalation between the nuclear-armed nations has caused global anxiety and concern.
