IMF Loan to Pakistan Sparks Controversy: Omar Abdullah Raises Concerns

Omar Abdullah Condemns IMF Loan to Pakistan
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has publicly criticized the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for approving a $1 billion loan to Pakistan. This comes at a time of heightened tensions between the two countries following a recent terror attack in India.
Abdullah took to social media platform X to express his disapproval, stating, “I’m not sure how the ‘International Community’ thinks the current tension in the subcontinent will be de-escalated when the IMF essentially reimburses Pakistan for all the ordnance it is using to devastate Poonch, Rajouri, Uri, Tangdhar & so many other places.”
The IMF’s Response
The IMF announced the loan disbursement on Friday, stating that it was part of Pakistan’s 37-month Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement aimed at “building resilience and enabling sustainable growth”. The loan, which brings the total disbursement to about $2.1 billion, was approved in September 2024.
India’s Concerns
India has expressed concerns about the effectiveness of IMF programs in Pakistan, citing its history of poor implementation and adherence to program conditions. The Indian Ministry of Finance pointed out Pakistan’s “prolonged borrowing” from the IMF and its “poor track record” in utilizing funds effectively. They also raised concerns about the potential misuse of debt financing for state-sponsored cross-border terrorism.
India highlighted the Pakistani military’s significant influence in economic affairs, stating that it poses risks of policy slippages and reversal of reforms. The ministry emphasized that even with a civilian government in power, the army continues to play a prominent role in domestic politics and the economy.
Escalating Tensions
The recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam last month, which resulted in the death of 26 people, has further escalated tensions between India and Pakistan. This incident adds another layer of complexity to the already strained relationship between the two nations.
