Hyderabad Fire: 17 Dead, Brave Rescues Highlight Safety Gap

A devastating fire ripped through a building near Hyderabad’s iconic Charminar on Sunday, claiming the lives of 17 people, including eight children. The tragedy has renewed calls for stricter fire safety measures in the city.

Ordinary Men Become Heroes

While the fire raged, a group of men returning from prayers risked their own lives to save those trapped inside. Mir Zahed and Mohd Azmath, who witnessed two women pleading for help, bravely entered the smoke-filled building, breaking through barriers to reach the victims. Their heroic efforts resulted in saving 13 people before emergency services arrived.

“After namaz, while I was returning, two women from the building called out for help,” Mir Zahed recounted to reporters. “We went inside, and the room was filled with smoke. We found seven people dead in one room.”

Praise and Recognition

BJP leader Madhavi Latha hailed the courage of these everyday heroes, praising their selfless actions in the face of danger. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) also recognized their bravery, felicitating them at their headquarters.

Government Under Fire

While commending the rescuers, Madhavi Latha also pointed a finger at the state government, questioning the effectiveness of their fire safety measures. She questioned how residents in narrow lanes, where emergency vehicles struggle to reach, could be protected in case of a fire.

A Tragic Recurrence

This fire, the worst to hit Hyderabad in recent years, underscores a recurring issue: the lack of adequate fire safety measures in multi-storey buildings. Despite promises and announcements following previous tragedies, the enforcement of safety norms remains lax, leaving residents vulnerable. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for stricter regulations and improved fire safety practices to prevent such disasters in the future.
