French Defense Minister’s Trip to India Called Off Following Pahalgam Attack

France has postponed Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s visit to India due to the recent attack in Pahalgam. This delay affects a crucial defense deal between the two countries, which was set to be finalized on April 28th.

The deal, worth over ₹63,000 crore ($7.8 billion), involves the sale of 26 Rafale-Marine combat jets to the Indian Navy. This agreement was expected to be signed in New Delhi by senior officials from both sides.

A Significant Defense Agreement on Hold

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet Committee on Security approved the deal. This government-to-government contract includes a comprehensive package for the Indian Navy, encompassing 22 single-seater and four twin-seater Rafale-Marine jets. The deal also includes fleet maintenance, logistical support, personnel training, and the development of indigenous components.

The Rafale jets, manufactured by Dassault Aviation, are expected to be delivered within 37 to 65 months. The final delivery date is anticipated to be around 2030-31. These jets will be based on the Indian Navy’s aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, enhancing its capabilities alongside the existing MiG-29K fleet.

Strengthening India’s Airpower

The Indian Air Force already operates 36 Rafale jets, acquired under a separate agreement in 2016. These are stationed at Ambala and Hashimara.

With the addition of these 26 Rafale-Marine jets, India’s total Rafale fleet will reach 62, significantly bolstering its 4.5-plus-generation fighter aircraft capabilities.

Looking Ahead

While the attack has caused a postponement, both India and France are likely to reschedule the signing ceremony in the coming days.
