Delhi Sounds Air Raid Sirens in Mock Drill Amidst Border Tensions

Delhi Conducts Air Raid Siren Test Amidst India-Pakistan Standoff
Delhi residents were startled on Friday by the sound of air raid sirens as part of a planned mock drill. This exercise comes amidst escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, which have seen Pakistan launch missile and drone attacks on Indian military targets.
Government Assures Calm
The Delhi government, through a statement released before the drill, emphasized that this was a routine test of the air raid sirens installed at the Public Works Department (PWD) headquarters in ITO. They urged the public not to panic and assured everyone that the sirens were part of a planned exercise.
District Magistrate (Central) G Sudhakar echoed this sentiment, asking people to remain calm and not be alarmed by the sound of the sirens.
Expanding Siren Network
PWD Minister Parvesh Verma announced that Delhi will soon be equipped with many more air raid sirens. He stated that at least 40-50 additional sirens will be installed on high-rise buildings across the city, each with a coverage range of 8 kilometers. This expansion is expected to be completed within a couple of days.
Mr. Verma explained that these sirens will be activated during emergency situations and will be centrally controlled from a single command center. The sirens will sound for a duration of 5 minutes when activated.
Escalating Border Tensions
For the past two days, Pakistan has launched a series of missile and drone attacks targeting Indian military installations. These attacks have spanned across various locations, including Pathankot in Punjab, Jammu and Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir. While all missiles and drones were intercepted and neutralized, the incidents have heightened military preparedness on both sides.
Following these attacks, India responded by targeting Pakistan’s air defense systems, successfully neutralizing at least one in Lahore. This escalation comes after Pakistan launched similar attacks on Wednesday night, prompting India to conduct targeted strikes on terror bases in Pakistan.
The current standoff between India and Pakistan is a cause for concern, with both nations seemingly engaged in a dangerous game of brinkmanship. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, hoping for a peaceful resolution to avert a larger conflict.
