Delhi Airport Cancels 60 Domestic Flights Amid India-Pakistan Tensions
More than 60 domestic flights were canceled at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday (May 10) due to escalating security measures following heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.
According to airport authorities, 30 domestic departures and 30 arrivals were canceled between morning hours and 3 pm IST. However, international flights remained unaffected.
Background on the Tensions
The cancellations come after recent airstrikes by Indian forces under Operation Sindoor targeting terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This has led to increased military tensions between the two countries.
Impact on Operations
While international connectivity at Delhi airport is largely unaffected, the domestic sector continues to experience disruptions due to airspace coordination and enhanced security checks.
The Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), which operates IGIA, has stressed that overall airport operations remain normal but emphasized that flight schedules are subject to change due to the evolving security situation. Passengers are advised to confirm their flight status directly with their airlines before heading to the airport.
Security Measures at the Airport
Security protocols at Delhi airport and other major hubs have been significantly tightened. This includes longer processing times at security checkpoints and an increased deployment of personnel. Passengers are urged to arrive at the airport well in advance of their departure to avoid any last-minute complications.
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has extended the mandate of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to encompass oversight of cargo operations and hold baggage screening. This move aims to strengthen the overall aviation security infrastructure during this heightened alert phase.
Looking Ahead
As the situation remains dynamic, aviation authorities are closely collaborating with the Ministry of Civil Aviation and security agencies to ensure public safety while minimizing disruption to air travel. Further updates are anticipated depending on the development of the security scenario in the coming days.
