China Backs Pakistan After Pahalgam Terror Attack, Amid Global Outrage

China Stands with Pakistan After Deadly Attack
Amidst growing international condemnation of the recent terrorist attack in India’s Pahalgam region, China has come out in strong support of Pakistan. The April 22nd attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people, has heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.
China’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement urging both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and work towards de-escalating the situation. They stressed that the conflict doesn’t serve the interests of either nation or regional stability. The Ministry also emphasized that combating terrorism is a shared responsibility for all countries.
A Statement of Support
A spokesperson for Chinese President Xi Jinping went further, saying that China fully understands Pakistan’s security concerns and stands firmly behind its ally. They reiterated China’s long-standing support for Pakistan’s efforts to combat terrorism.
Diplomatic Efforts
This comes as diplomatic efforts are underway to address the situation. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was expected to meet with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on the sidelines of a BRICS meeting in Brazil. Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar expressed his gratitude to China for its unwavering support.
UNSC Statement
The UN Security Council (UNSC) also addressed the attack, calling for accountability for those responsible. China and Pakistan, a non-permanent member of the UNSC, played a role in shaping the statement, ensuring that it did not explicitly refer to the Indian government.
India’s Response
In response to the attack, India has taken several steps, including suspending the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, closing a border crossing, revoking visas for Pakistani citizens, and expelling Pakistani military officers serving as diplomats in India.
International Calls for Calm
Iran has also been involved in diplomatic efforts, with its President speaking to both Indian and Pakistani leaders, urging for calm and understanding.
