Chhonzin Angmo: Triumph on Everest as First Visually Impaired Woman Summits

A Historic Climb
Chhonzin Angmo, a 29-year-old woman from a remote village in Himachal Pradesh, India, has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first visually impaired person from India – and only the fifth globally – to summit Mount Everest.
Overcoming Adversity
Angmo’s journey to the top of the world is truly inspiring. She lost her vision in both eyes at a young age due to a medicine allergy, a challenge that could have easily deterred her dreams. However, with unwavering determination and the support of her loving family, she persevered.
“My role model is Helen Keller, whose books and biography I read as a student. My father, too, is a role model… There were times when people would taunt me for being visually impaired. But my father and my family supported me in this journey. If I, or they, would have been disheartened, we could not have taken a step forward in life,” Angmo shared in an interview.
Educated and Empowered
Angmo’s education played a crucial role in shaping her path. After attending a special school for visually impaired children in Leh, she went on to graduate from Miranda House in Delhi. She also completed a basic climbing course at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports in Manali, where she successfully scaled Friendship Peak.
Scaling New Heights
In 2021, Angmo participated in Operation Blue Freedom, an expedition to Siachen Glacier led by Team Claw, an organization of Armed Forces veterans. This experience further fueled her passion for mountaineering.
It was a meeting with Skalzang Rigzin, the first Indian civilian to summit Everest without supplemental oxygen, that solidified Angmo’s dream of conquering the world’s highest peak. Impressed by her willpower and climbing skills, Rigzin encouraged her to take on the challenge.
Sponsored Success
Last year, Angmo received the National Award for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. Inspired by her achievements, the Union Bank of India sponsored her Everest expedition. With the support of mountaineering firms Boots & Crampons and Pioneer Adventures of Nepal, Angmo embarked on her journey.
She meticulously followed acclimatisation cycles, ascending from Camp 1 to Camp 4, overcoming challenging terrain and treacherous icefalls with the help of sherpas and experienced climbers.
A Moment of Pride
On a momentous day, Angmo reached the summit of Mount Everest, hoisting the Indian flag and inspiring millions back home. Her achievement is a testament to the indomitable spirit of humanity and the power of perseverance.
Inspiration from the Himalayas
Chhonzin Angmo’s story is a beacon of hope for everyone facing challenges. Her journey reminds us that with determination, support, and a belief in oneself, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve our dreams.
