Breaking News: India Shoots Down Pakistani F-16 in Fierce Cross-Border Attack

India Reels from Pakistani Drone and Missile Barrage
Tensions have exploded between India and Pakistan, marking a significant escalation in the long-running conflict. Several areas in Jammu, along with parts of Rajasthan and Punjab, were targeted in a series of drone and missile attacks originating from Pakistan on Thursday. This attack came just a day after India launched airstrikes against terror camps in Pakistan and the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir region.
India Repels Attacks, Shoots Down Pakistani Jet
In a swift and decisive response, India successfully thwarted the Pakistani attacks. The Indian air defense system intercepted several incoming projectiles, including at least eight missiles. A Pakistani F-16 fighter jet was shot down, along with possibly two JF-17 jets. A drone attack also struck the Jammu Civil Airport, causing disruption but no reported casualties.
Counteroffensive Launched, Blackout Enforced
India retaliated with its own counteroffensive, launching drones and missiles at targets in Lahore, Pakistan. A complete blackout was imposed across Jammu and select areas in Punjab and Rajasthan, with sirens blaring in major cities. A similar blackout was enforced in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
High-Level Meetings and International Response
Following the unprecedented escalation, high-level meetings were convened in India. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff, and the heads of the three armed services reviewed the situation. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with the Directors General of paramilitary forces.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar contacted US Secretary of State Rubio, emphasizing India’s measured response to cross-border terrorism. He also met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, stating that India would respond firmly to any future aggression but had no intention of escalating tensions.
Schools Closed, IPL Game Halted
In light of the escalating conflict, all schools, colleges, and universities across Punjab were ordered closed for three days. Schools in Chandigarh were also shut for the next two days. Public access to courts in Amritsar and the border town of Ajnala was restricted from May 9 to May 14.
The IPL 2025 match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamshala was abruptly halted after 10.1 overs, with players immediately escorted out of the stadium for safety.
India Accuses Pakistan of Hamas-Style Tactics
Defence sources have likened the Pakistani Army’s actions to those of Hamas, alleging that Pakistan’s ISI held a meeting with Hamas representatives in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in April.
Speaking on the situation, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that India had merely responded to Pakistan’s escalation and that the choice to de-escalate rested with Pakistan.
