Border Schools Closed Amidst Heightened India-Pakistan Tensions

Schools Closed in Punjab and Rajasthan Amidst Soaring Tensions
Schools across six border districts in Punjab and several districts in Rajasthan were shut on Thursday, May 8, 2025, as tensions between India and Pakistan escalated.
In Punjab, all schools were closed in Ferozepur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Tarn Taran districts. The closures are a precautionary measure, with authorities in Tarn Taran ordering schools to remain closed until May 11th and officials in Ferozepur extending the closure for 72 hours until further notice.
The situation in Punjab is so serious that the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) has canceled all leave for Punjab Police officers and employees, effective May 7th. Leaves will only be granted in exceptional circumstances, requiring approval from higher authorities.
Rajasthan Follows Suit
In Rajasthan, schools in border districts like Barmer, Bikaner, Sri Ganganagar, and Jaisalmer were also closed until further notice. District Collector Tina Dabi issued the order, citing national security concerns and the safety of students. The order extends to all government, private, and educational institutions, including Anganwadis and Madrasas, up to class 12th.
The district of Jodhpur also announced the closure of all private and government schools and Anganwadis. District Collector Gaurav Agarwal stated that the decision was taken in light of the current situation.
Like Punjab, Rajasthan has also taken steps to ensure adequate security in border areas. Sources confirm that the state government has canceled the leaves of all administrative officials and police personnel deployed along the border.
