BJP Wins Delhi Mayoral Election, Raja Iqbal Takes the Helm

BJP Secures Victory in Delhi Mayoral Election

In a significant political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reclaimed control of Delhi’s Municipal Corporation (MCD) after a two-year hiatus. Raja Iqbal, a seasoned BJP politician, has been elected as the city’s new mayor, defeating Congress candidate Mandeep Singh in a decisive victory.

The election took place on Friday, April 25, 2025. Iqbal secured 133 out of 142 votes cast, reflecting the BJP’s strong hold in the municipal body. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) opted to boycott the election.

As Iqbal assumed his new role, BJP councillors erupted in cheers of “Bharat Mata ki Jai.” In his victory speech, Iqbal outlined his priorities, which included making parks greener, tackling corruption and pollution, and immediately removing user charges. He also pledged to support teachers, provide funds for student uniforms, and improve school infrastructure.

Iqbal, who previously served as the Leader of the Opposition in the MCD and as Mayor of North MCD, brings a wealth of experience to the position. His political lineage is deeply rooted in the Akali Dal, a prominent party in Punjab. His father-in-law and brother-in-law were both active in Akali politics, further solidifying his connections within the party.

The BJP’s victory in the Delhi mayoral election marks a significant political win for the party and sets the stage for future contests in the national capital.
