BJP Minister Under Fire for Veiled Remark

Madhya Pradesh minister Kunwar Vijay Shah has once again landed himself in controversy with a remark that critics say alludes to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a prominent figure in Operation Sindoor. Shah, a prominent tribal leader within the BJP and known for his controversial statements, made the remark at an event near Mhow on Monday. He said, “India had taught a lesson to those responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack using their own sister (unki samaaj ki behen ke zariye),”

Shah’s Controversial Statement

The Congress quickly accused Shah of referring to Colonel Qureshi, who played a key role in the Operation Sindoor retaliatory strike following the Pahalgam terror attack. Shah repeated the comment three times during his speech. Later, he attempted to clarify, stating that his words should not be taken out of context. He added, “They are our sisters, and they have taken revenge with great strength along with the armed forces.”

Shah’s History of Controversy

This isn’t the first time Shah has found himself embroiled in controversy. He has a history of making controversial statements that have drawn criticism. In 2013, he was forced to resign from the state Cabinet due to alleged sexist remarks about then CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s wife. He was subsequently reinstated.

BJP’s Dilemma

Despite facing disciplinary action, Shah remains influential within the BJP, particularly in his tribal strongholds. A BJP leader, speaking anonymously, stated, “He cannot be sidelined and holds key portfolios in the Mohan Yadav Cabinet despite many Chouhan-era ministers being dropped.” Shah’s sway in the tribal regions, which make up 21% of the state’s population and hold significant electoral influence, is a key factor in his continued position within the party.

Focus on Tribal Voters

The BJP’s renewed focus on tribal voters, who are estimated to influence the outcome in 47 of the state’s 230 Assembly seats, underscores Shah’s importance. The party recognizes the potential impact of the tribal vote and is actively seeking to engage with this demographic.

Previous Controversies

Shah’s past controversies include remarks perceived as derogatory towards the transgender community, insults toward former Prime Ministers, and veiled criticism of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. He has also sparked controversy over his mandate for students to answer roll call with “Jai Hind” and his warning to educational institutions that don’t play the national anthem.
