Bengaluru Braces for More Rain After Overnight Floods
Bengaluru, the tech hub of India, is facing the brunt of heavy rainfall that has caused widespread flooding and traffic disruptions.
Overnight Downpour Causes Havoc
The city was pounded by heavy rain for over six hours during the night, leading to waterlogging in numerous areas. Traffic is moving at a snail’s pace due to the flooded roads.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for Bengaluru until Friday, predicting that moderate rainfall will continue throughout the week.
Tragedy Strikes
Tragically, a 35-year-old woman, identified as Shashikala, lost her life when a compound wall collapsed on her at her workplace in Bengaluru’s IT corridor during the heavy downpour.
The wall collapse occurred at an IZMO Ltd software firm in the Mahadevapura police limits.
CM’s Visit Planned
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is scheduled to visit the rain-affected areas on Monday to assess the situation.
Traffic Disruptions Across City
The Bengaluru City police issued a traffic advisory, warning of disruptions in several northern areas, including New Bel Road, Nagawara, Sarayipalya, and Allalasandra to Yelahanka Circle, due to waterlogging.
More Rain Expected
The IMD forecasts partly cloudy skies with heavy rain and thunderstorms for the city today. Maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 30 and 20 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Opposition Calls for Accountability
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticised the ruling Congress government, blaming them for the city’s woes. They have demanded a white paper on spending and questioned the administration’s handling of the situation. Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has responded, stating that the government is working to address the long-standing issues.
Heavy Rainfall Across the State
The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds in districts like Vijayapura, Bagalkote, Raichur, Koppal, Yadgir, and Gadag.
