Bengaluru Under Heavy Rain

Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, is battling incessant rainfall that has led to widespread waterlogging and flooding. The downpour has made it difficult for residents to go about their daily lives, with many areas submerged.

Weather Warnings in Place

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Bengaluru, indicating a potential for heavy rain (8 to 10 centimeters) in the coming days. A yellow alert is in place for several other areas across Karnataka.

The IMD’s Bengaluru Centre Director, N Puviarasu, confirmed the orange alert and warned of the significant impact heavy rain could have on the city.

Forecast and Potential Developments

The IMD predicts partly cloudy skies with heavy rain or thunderstorms for Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to range between 20 degrees Celsius (minimum) and 27 degrees Celsius (maximum). This pattern is expected to continue throughout the week.

The weather department also anticipates the formation of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the east-central Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast around May 21. This could further intensify into a low-pressure area around May 22, potentially moving northwards and strengthening.

Tragic Loss of Life

Unfortunately, the heavy rains have claimed the lives of at least five people. Two individuals in Bengaluru were electrocuted while trying to manage waterlogging at a residential complex. A 63-year-old man, Manmohan Kamath, and a 12-year-old boy, Dinesh, both died after being pulled from the water and rushed to the hospital.

In a separate incident, a 35-year-old woman, Shashikala, working as a housekeeping staff at a software company in Bengaluru’s Mahadevapura area, was killed when a compound wall collapsed on her due to the heavy overnight rain. Two other deaths were reported in Raichur and Karwar due to lightning strikes.

Officials Working to Help

Despite the challenges, Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar has assured the public that officials are working tirelessly to address the situation and there is no need to panic.
