US Tax Bill Dents Indian Solar Stocks

Shares of Premier Energies Ltd. and Waaree Energies Ltd. saw a dip on Friday, May 23, mirroring a sharp decline in their US-based clean energy counterparts. The drop comes after the US House of Representatives narrowly passed a new tax bill proposed by President Donald Trump, which aims to significantly curtail funding for clean energy projects.

Clean Energy Stocks Tumble in the US

Major US solar and wind energy companies like Sunrun and NextEra Energy experienced substantial losses, plunging as much as 37% in a single trading session. These companies rely heavily on government incentives introduced under the Biden Administration’s Inflation Reduction Act, which the proposed Trump bill seeks to dismantle.

Key Provisions of the Bill

The bill targets various clean energy initiatives, including:

  • Eliminating funding for clean energy projects initially supported by the Inflation Reduction Act.
  • Repealing grants aimed at reducing air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting the adoption of electric heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Abolishing the 30% federal tax credit for individuals installing rooftop solar systems.

Impact on Indian Companies

The bill’s passage has sent ripples through the Indian solar sector, particularly affecting companies like Premier and Waaree, which have a significant export market presence. Waaree, for instance, boasts an order book of nearly ₹47,000 crore, with 57% directed towards exports. This dependence on the US market makes them vulnerable to the proposed changes in US clean energy policy.

Market Reaction

Waaree Energies shares opened 6.2% lower on Friday, trading at ₹2,812. Premier Energies shares also experienced a decline, falling 2.5% to ₹1,057. The market is clearly reacting to the uncertainty created by the potential changes in the US clean energy landscape.
